The fourth season of the critically-acclaimed Bones hit HBO on Sunday with a cast that includes Katee Sackhoff as Bones, Billie Lourd as Bones’ daughter Abby, Anthony Hopkins as Bones and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Bones.
But unlike the previous two seasons, the series will not feature the returning cast of Bones and it is unclear whether the return will be in the form of an animated movie or a TV series.
This is a departure from previous seasons in which Bones, along with The Originals and The Killing, was a prequel series.
“We want to make sure we do our best to be as faithful to the series as possible,” executive producer J.J. Abrams told Variety.
“It’s a show about the family, so we want to create a show that really does touch upon all of those things.”
Abrams said that Bones will focus on Abby and Bones’ relationship with their father and the legacy of the death of Bones’ mother.
“The fact that we have a show where the parents are the ones in the relationship is really important to us,” Abrams said.
“You’ve got the mom on the one hand and the dad on the other, and the fact that they’re both involved in the death that took their family away, it’s really a really interesting relationship.”
Season 3 is slated to premiere on February 10, 2019.
